Beta Theta Pi offers multiple scholarships for new members:
Oliver Elliott Memorial Scholarship, $3,000
Oliver Elliott graduated from WSU with a degree in Business Economics in 1942. Brother Elliott served as a CEO and chair of the board for 18 different companies in his successful business career. In 1988, Oliver and his wife, Betty, contributed $7.6 million to what is now the Elliott School of Communications at Wichita State University. Brother Elliott bestowed the 1988 President's Medal and the 1991 WSU Alumni Achievement Award, which are the two highest honors given by Wichita State. He also served on the WSU Endowment Association Board of Governors, the WSU Board of Trustees, and was the WSU Alumni Association President. Oliver Elliott passed away in 1996. He will forever be remembered as a gentleman, philanthropist and scholar.
James L. Mann Scholarship $3,000
Jim Mann is a local Beta Theta Pi success story. He graduated from WSU with a degree in Business Administration in 1956 and took his first job as a salesman with IBM. In 1983, he started a computer and software business in association with a Wichita-based accounting firm, Fox & Company. This business was subsequently merged with United Data Centers, Inc. and then with Tymeshare, Inc. Today, Brother Mann is the Chairman of SunGard Data Systems (NYSE-SDS), a computer services and software company with $2.5 billion in revenue.
Paul T. and Mary Jane Curry Endowed Scholarship $2,000
The Paul T. and Mary Jane Curry Endowed Scholarship is awarded to students who are freshman members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity majoring in Entrepreneurship in the Barton School of Business at Wichita State University. Paul Curry was origionally from Indiana and came to the University of Wichita on a basketball scholarship. In addition to basketball, Paul participated in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and was a Senior Honor Man. He graduated in 1954 with a degree in Business with empases in accounting and economics. Mary Jane (Comstock) Curry attended WU in 1955. Paul enjoyed a successful business career as a corporate officer for Hamilton Cosco and as an entrpreneur operating Curry Industries. This scholarship was created by the Currys to allow them to "give back" to the university.
Minnie Armour & James D. Armour, PH.D. Scholarship $1,500
Dr. James Armour graduated from WSU with a degree in Business Administration in 1964. Dr. Armour went on to recieve his master's, doctorate and MBA degree. Prior to his retirement from Southeastern Illinois College in May 2001, he spent 30 years as a psychology professor. In 2002, Dr. Armour passed away peacefully at home. He is remembered as a true gentleman, musician and scholar.
Dr. Armour's mother, Minnie Armour, served as the House Mother for the Alpha Gamma Gamma house from 1950 until they recieved their charter and became the new Delta Gamma Chapter of Beta Theta Pi in 1959. She continued her service for the gentlemen of Beta until 1962.
